Question

Am I a California resident or nonresident?

I got married in 2022 as an F-1 holder and changed my visa status to H4 in January 2023. In 2023, I became a green card holder but I stayed outside of the US most of the time in 2023 and  I only stayed in California for less than 4 months. My spouse stayed in the US most of the time in 2023.

At this tax filing time, I am not sure if I was a California resident or not in 2023 because I have a green card which should make me a resident, but I only resided for less than 4 months.

Could I get any advice about this matter?

The GreenCard makes you a US Resident.  It does not make you a resident of a particular state.

Did you work in CA?

If you lived in CA for 4 months, then you would be a Part Year Resident, if you did not maintain a home elsewhere.

If you maintained a home elsewhere and CA was only like a place to work or visit, then you would be considered a CA nonresident and only need to file a CA return if you earned income while there.
