Question

Am I Considered a California Resident?

I was a California resident most of my life.  However, I sold my possession including house and have not stepped foot in the state in over 5 years.  I have, however used my brother's address as my mailing address for all official correspondence such as social security etc. I also have a bank account in the state.   I earn no income except SS. I pay 0 federal taxes.  I am pretty much a vagabond at this point and spent most of my time out of the USA.

Given the information above, am I required to file California income taxes?  Thank you in advance for you help!

If you are no longer domiciled in California and you have not been present in the state for over 5 years, then no, you are no longer a resident of California. As a non-resident. you would have a tax obligation to California only if you had California-sourced income.
