Amending a tax refund

Do I have to get the funds for my original tax refund before amending it? Or can I amend it right away?

It is est to wait for the first return to clear completely from the IRS system.

You do not need to receive the refund, but you should wait until the return has processed. 

If you only recently filed and now will owe, make sure you make the additional payment even if you need to wait until the original return has processed to file the amended return. 

You can make the payment on the IRS website, make sure you indicate that it is for tax year 2023. 

The link to the IRS site can also be used to keep track of all the transactions you have with the IRS.
