Question

Are My Wages Associated with Utah or Texas?

I began receiving military pay with the Air Force in Dec 2019 and moved from Utah to Texas (where I remained stationed for all of 2020) over Christmas 2019.  The paperwork to change my official state residence to Texas did not go through until the end of January 2020, so I had 1 month of state taxes withheld for Utah.  Doing my 2020 state taxes in Turbotax, it says "if there is no association with Utah, enter a zero" for the Utah portion of my federal income.  Since the income was not earned in Utah, but in Texas, and I physically lived in Texas for all of 2020, do I put a 0 for Utah portion of my income?  Or, since my "official" residence was not changed on paper until February 1st, do I still report my January wages as associated with Utah?

The correct way to handle this situation is to file as a part-year resident in UT.  In the "My Info" section you will indicate that your current state of residence is TX .  You will then indicate that you lived in another state in 2020 and select UT and the date your residence changed to TX.

This will generate the proper state form for UT.  Entering your military W2 with the UT line included will transfer to your UT state return.  Only your wages earned while still a resident of UT (January) need to be taxed there.
