Question

CA resident in WA for 3 months with WA wages

I am a CA resident, except 3 months last year, I moved to WA and earned wages from a WA employer.

When I file state taxes, do I need to backfill the taxes for 3 months? Can I enter the exit date and reentry date and only pay the taxes for before my departure and after my arrival?

I tried to read through https://www.ftb.ca.gov/file/personal/residency-status/part-year-and-nonresident.html but it didn't have an example like my case.

You will have to file a tax return for each state you worked in.

When entering your state tax returns, when multiple states are involved, you should enter your nonresidential state tax return first (WA).

Then enter your residential state tax return (CA).

It is recommended to prepare the nonresident state first, because your resident state will provide you a credit for the tax you pay to the nonresident state.  By preparing the nonresident state first, TurboTax can transfer the credit information to your resident state to return.
