CA tax return required?

My wife and I moved from CA to TX in December 2021. In February 2022, we sold our former home in CA. The capital gain on the sale was well below the $500k exclusion for married joint returns, and we have no other CA-source income in 2022. Thus, our 2022 CA tax liability should be zero. Do we still need to file a CA tax return?

CA follows the federal rules for the capital gains exclusion on the sale of your primary home.  If you were a full-year non-resident of CA, and your capital gain is excluded at the federal level, and you have no other CA-source income, there is no need for you to file a CA tax return.
