California State Tax for Part Time Resident

I lived and earned only from Ohio sources from 01/01 to 04/30 - consider this amount to be $A.

I then moved to California and had an income from only California sources - consider this amount to be $B.

Total income in 2024: $(A+B).

While filing Ohio state tax return, I'm only reporting Ohio income ($A).

While filing California State Tax Return, should I:

1. Report both incomes and deduct $A in the subtraction / deduction column? -> This reduces the Federal AGI.

2. Report only $B.

3. Report both incomes with no deductions as in 1. , and mention income from California sources out of the total income?  In this case, I will be taxed on my Ohio's income as well. How do I recover the California tax amount on $A?

You will file a California Part Year return.  In TurboTax, you will allocate the income you earned while a California resident and any other California source income (if any).

California uses its own method for calculating the tax of part-year residents and nonresidents.  Visit Taxation of Nonresidents and Individuals who Change Residency (FTB Publication 1100) for more information.
