Question

Can't figure out this error: "Return cannot be e filed when the sum of Illinois wages plus out of state wages on all W-2s does not equal total wages reported on IL schedule CR."

I've checked and the total wages box on my Federal 1040 (box 1z)  matches exactly the column A total on my IL Schedule CR.

TurboTax does not point out where the difference is. How to figure this out?

Please delete the current state return and add again, so it can pull fresh data from the federal return. This may resolve this error message.  Do you have out state wages in a Non-Resident return in another state?  If so, you will want to complete the Non-Resident return first, and the Resident return last.

    If this is TurboTax Online

    1. Go to the States section and click on the trashcan icon
    2. Confirm Delete
    3. Select Add another state button

    In TurboTax Desktop

    1. Return to the federal portion of the return and on the menu bar select File
    2. Then click on Remove State Return
    3. Select the Remove button
    4. Select Yes
    5. Then return to the State section and add the state return again

I tried that and it still gave the same error.

And yes, I have an out of state return as well.

I am in the same situation.  I tried talking to two TurboTax support people and a Turbo Tax specialist yesterday for over an hour, but the best I got is "this is what TurboTax is calculating, so you have to file in person." Pretty frustrating experience as this form has been an issue for a few years now.

On our W2s, it looks like this as an example:

    IL wages: 80,000

CA wages: 20,000 (supposed to be reported on column B of Schedule CR)

Federal wages: 80,000 (supposed to be reported on column A of Schedule CR)

I enter the exact numbers from the W2 and it results in this error in TurboTax. Yes, I know that 80 + 20 does not equal 80 but that's why I'm trying to fill this form out to get the credit.

Did anyone figure out how to bypass this error? Having the same issue but the totals are correct.

I believe the suggestion is to adjust the IL State income in the W2 section by deducting the amount of the other states. It looks like that information is not used anywhere except for this check in TurboTax software.
