Combination of working NJ/NY remotely

Hi -

I was looking for some guidance on my current state tax filing situation.

  • My employer is based in NYC
  • I lived in NYC from Jan - Jul
  • I lived in NJ from Jul - Dec
  • I worked remotely for the most of the full year but due to an immigration process I had to go once a week to the office in NY from Jul-Dec

With the above, I'm a bit confused on whether I should allocate all my wages to NY? Thanks!

No, NY only taxes income earned while in NY. So your resident time there is NY income plus the days you worked in NY while living in NJ. Then, NJ will give you a credit for NY tax paid so figure out your NY return first. NJ does not have a part year return so you must file a full year return and exclude the NY wages from before your arrival.
