Question

Deduction after Moving

Move family moved to Virginia in August 2023.

Before moving to Virginia, our children were in daycare and thus we claimed the cost of the daycare as a Child and Dependent Care deduction.

However, this all happened before we move.  We paid for no child care in Virginia after we moved, but TurboTax is pulling the full value of the Child Care on 760PY line 14.

Seems like a bug, is there any way to work around it?  (eg: manually edit the form after it has been generated?)

You are correct.  VA only allows the Child and Dependent Care deduction for expenses paid while resident in VA.  In the VA state interview, edit the "Income" section and scroll down to the "Home" section and revisit the Child and Dependent Care topic.  There you can enter zeros in the boxes for you and your spouse as applicable.

Here is an extract from the VA PY Instructions

"Child and Dependent Care Expenses:  Enter the child and dependent care expenses paid while you were a Virginia resident on which the federal credit for child and dependent care expenses is based."
