Question

District of Columbia paid family leave - double counting?

I've entered my DC paid family leave income on the federal section, and then when it goes to the state taxes, it asks specifically about paid family leave again and says to enter the income obtained through PFL.  I fear TurboTax is double reporting my PFL income on my state taxes by pulling income data from the federal AND asking again to enter PFL income. There is no way to check whether this is actually happening. Please advise.

You should always look at your tax forms. Schedule I will show additions. To print or view  your forms, including all worksheets:

  • In desktop, switch to Forms Mode.
  • For online:
    1. On the left side, select  Tax Tools
    2. Select Print center
    3. Select Print, save or preview this year's return
    4. If you have not paid, select pay now.

The IRS announced in January 2025, that it is federally taxable and DC also taxes the income. The program was set to tax in DC only before the change. You do not want to have it double taxed in DC.
