Do I have to file a North Carolina state return if I will have a negative Taxable income.?

I am a  resident of North Carolina.  Last year my North Carolina taxable income was $0.00 and It will be the same this year. Why do I have to file a north carolina return

Please keep all the discussion of your problem in one place. When information is scattered in multiple threads it's confusing and hard to follow, and hard to see the whole picture. Pick one of your two threads to continue the discussion, and do not post anything more to the other thread.


In your first post you said your North Carolina income is negative $800. Here you say it is zero. Please clarify.

Not sure whether you are asking about 2022 taxes being prepared now...or 2023 taxes to be done next year.

BUT.....

 

........the requirement to prepare and "File" an NC tax return depends entirely on your Federal AGI (Gross Income before deductions) . Federal AGI is line 11 on your fully-prepared form 1040.  (NOT line 15).

 

Then the "Federal AGI" minimums for preparing and "filing" a NC 2022 tax return are shown in a table at the following website (2023 would be similar, but have not yet been posted):
