Question

Do I need to file a Kansas City Wage Earner's Earnings Tax return if I got 1099 money from a business in TN and no tax was taken out?

This tax situation only applies to Kansas City employers right?

What kind of 1099 did you get and what was it for?   If you are a resident of KC and the 1099 income is from self-employment, you owe a 1% tax on the net profit of your business.

All Kansas City, Missouri, residents are required to pay the earnings tax, even if they work outside the city.   Nonresidents are required to pay the earnings tax on income earned within Kansas City, Missouri, city limits.   The tax also applies to the net profits of businesses.   If you filed a Schedule C, you are self-employed and owe the tax on your net business income.   TurboTax can e-file your KC Earning Tax form - RD 109.

Is my income from Self-Employment?

It was a 1099-MISC (self-employment, royalties), so I just went ahead and planned on filing the Kansas City return as well. Thank you!
