Do I need to file a state return for Virginia if I do not live there, but my workplace was located there?

I live in Maryland, but the workplace where I earned my income was in Virginia.

Under some circumstances you would have to file two states returns, however Maryland and Virginia have state reciprocity.

Reciprocity, is an agreement between two states that allows residents of one state (MA) to request exemption from tax withholding in the other (reciprocal) state (VA). This can save you the trouble of having to file multiple state returns.

If your employer has withheld taxes for the work state instead of the resident state, you'll have to file for a refund from your work state. You'll still file your resident return that also includes that income and pay tax on it.

TurboTax handles reciprocal states and will generate the correct state(s) based on your personal information and your W-2.

You can see which states have reciprocal agreements and, if you live in one of those states, the exemption form you can file.  If you file an exemption form to not have withholding from that state, be sure to ask your employer to withhold taxes from your resident state.

You can view your entire return or just your 1040 form before you e-file to check to make sure that these entries and state(s) return(s) are correct:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Open or continue your return
  3. Select Tax Tools from the menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner)
  4. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:
    • Preview your entire return: Select Print Center and then Print, save or preview this year's return (you may be asked to register or pay first)
    • View only your 1040 form: Select Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu
