Question

Do I need to file an Iowa state tax return if I received an Iowa 1065 K-1 if I am a non-resident?

Invested in an Iowa real estate partnership in 2023 and I received an Iowa 1065 K-1 and I live in another state. There is an amount on the page one showing a Partners share of Iowa receipts. The second page shows losses from the investment. I have never done an Iowa state return before and wondered if I needed to file one for the income on page one even though I never made any money this year.  If I need to do a state return I can but was not sure if I needed to.

Per the Iowa Department of Revenue, if you were a nonresident or part-year resident, you are required to file a return if your Iowa source is $1,000 or more.  Some examples of Iowa-source income are, wages earned in Iowa, rental income from a property in Iowa, and self-employment income earned while working in Iowa.  In your case, if your 1065 shows less than $1000 in income from Iowa you would not be required to file a return.
