Question

Do I need to file as a part-year resident if I moved from VA to PA on January 3, 2019? Does my last paycheck from my VA job (arrived post-move) count as PA or VA income?

Let's look at the law.It was earned while living and working in VA and is considered VA source income. The income was received while a resident of PA.

PA says you must declare income earned while a  PA resident.

VA says: You have to file if you have VA source income AND it is over $11,950 for single/MFS.

Was your last paycheck from VA source income over $11,950? If yes, then you must file a VA non-resident return. Then do a out of state credit for PA based on VA income.

Otherwise, it just stays with PA like normal.
