Question

Do I need to file Illinois state tax if the income was less than $1000?

Hi,

I live in CA, but have less than $1000 income from Illinois, which is shown on the W2. Do I need to file IL tax return? Turbotax only populated CA return for me.

Thanks,

Eric

Illinois' filing requirement for non-residents requires some calculations.  Here's the rule:

As a nonresident, you must file Form IL-1040 and Schedule NR if

    • you earned enough taxable income from Illinois sources to have a tax liability ( i.e., your Illinois base income from Schedule NR, Step 5, Line 46, is greater than your Illinois exemption allowance on Schedule NR, Step 5, Line 50), or
    • you want a refund of any Illinois Income Tax withheld in error. You must attach a letter of explanation from your employer.

TT will generate a non-resident IL tax return if you indicate on the Personal Info page that you had other state income from Illinois.
