Question

Do I need to include my 1099-R on my state filing if it has no state withholding?

Hello! So this year was the first year I had to do taxes with a 1099-R form. I have already submitted my federal return through another site but they didn't offer free state filing. On turbotax, I only need to submit my state return but my 1099-R form makes it not "simple" so I'd have to upgrade. I did try to do the taxes on my states website but I'd have to figure out the deductions myself and I am no good at that. On the state website it said "Only include 1099 forms that have state withholding. On my 1099 for the state, everything says 0 so does that mean I can just not add it to my state return and submit it without any issues so I can use the Free Edition still?

Thank you for any help!!

No, you will still have to report your Form 1099-R on your state return. The instructions "Only include 1099 forms that have state withholding" are referring to when you are mailing your state return that you only need to attach the Form 1099-R to the mailed return if it has withholdings.

If your retirement is actually taxable in your state will depend on your state.

Please see Can I prepare and file just my state return using TurboTax?.
