Question

Do I need to pre-pay the estimated NY state tax for 2022 tax year?

Hi,

I was a resident in New York in 2021, but I moved out from NY in October 2021. I started to work in California in Feb 2022.

TurboTax generates the IT-2105 to ask me to prepay the estimated NY state tax for 2022. Is it right that I can simply ignore it since I am not tax-related to New York in 2022?

Best Regards,

Yes, you can ignore it. TurboTax generates these forms based on your prior-year tax situation. If you owed New York taxes in 2021, the system believes you may benefit from paying estimated taxes to the state in 2022.

Since your situation has changed, it is unlikely that you will have a large tax burden to New York for 2022 and may ignore the estimated tax payments.

Be aware that even though you moved to California, if you are still working remotely for a New York employer, you will probably still be responsible for filing a New York tax return. If this is the case and you did owe a lot of NY taxes this year, you may pay estimated state taxes, or just ask your employer to withhold extra state taxes so that you do not face any penalties at the end of the year.
