Do I pay taxes on 3 months of North Carolina employer Severance pay if I moved out of state and established residency in Washington State after receiving it?

    Yes, you will still need to report the severance pay received on a NC state tax return. If you lived in NC for a portion of the year, you would need to file as a part-year resident and report your residency dates in MY INFO  As you go through your NC return, it will also ask you to enter or review your residency dates.

     

    Also, beware that North Carolina will ask you about your income allocation so you will want to make sure that only your severance pay is the only income taxed in NC and that all your other income is excluded.
