Do I still need to pay california state tax, even I have been out of the U.S. for the entire 2020,?

You don’t need to file a California income tax return if:

  • You did not live or work in California,
  • Did not receive any California source income, such as income from a rental property or business located in California; and
  • Cut ties to California

You would have to file if you had a closer connection to California than you did to Nicaragua. For example, you may have to file if you still owned a house in California, voted in a state election, kept a California driver’s license or intend to move back to California.
