My kids have unearned income around 1k and did not have to pay federal taxes. Do I need to file their state taxes?

Unlike federal tax, New Jersey does not have different filing requirements for dependents, and does not distinguish between earned and unearned income. Like any other New Jersey resident, a child is required to file a New Jersey tax return if the child's gross income is more than $10,000. If a child's only income is $1,000, whether earned or unearned, the child does not have to file a New Jersey tax return.
