The most common reason for the notice of miscalculation of the Recovery Rebate Credit is a conflict between the amount entered on the tax return as received by the taxpayer and the amount shown in IRS records as paid.

This occurred for many early filers who filed prior to receiving the second payment.  It could also occur for any of the other reasons listed on the display - but by far the most common is a conflict between these entries.

The IRS should follow up with a more specific reason in the mail.

Taxpayers who didn't receive a payment that is reflected in IRS records as sent should initiate a payment trace. To initiate a payment trace you can call the automated IRS line at 1-800-829-1954.

You can also submit Form 3911.  When completing Form 3911 for a stimulus payment write across the type of the form the letters EIP and the number of the payment that you are missing (1, 2, or 3).

If you are missing more than one payment file a separate form for each.

You can FAX this form to 855-332-3068 (recommended) or mail it to:

Fresno, CA 93888
