We paid estimated tax to West Virginia in a previous year, then ended up not owing any tax and it went to a credit. but we never received that money back. How do we file to get it?

someone told us to check line 17 on our state taxes but that doesn't make any sense to me.

Put the money into the program following the steps below.

Estimated tax payments go on line 17 of your WV tax return. It will show the year you made estimated payments.

Since I don't know dates, let me make up an example.

Example: 2018 made estimated payments  of $500 and tax liability was $200. Then $300 would have been refunded unless you marked to apply it to next year - which is line 25.

For 2019, tell the program that you had a state refund that needs to be applied to this year. Use that line 25 amount that you asked to apply.

How to steps:

  1. Go to Federal
  2. To Deductions and Credits
  3. Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  4. Locate Other Income Taxes
  5. Select Start
  6. Scroll down to 2018 Refund Applied to 2019
  7. Locate 2018 refund applied to 2019 state taxes
  8. Start
