Question

exclusion of retirement income on Georgia return

My Georgia return for 2021 does not exclude my retirement income entered on the federal portion of the return.  Georgia does not tax pensions, 401k RMDs and Social Security.  My Turbo Tax Georgia form 500 does not treat that income as an adjustment on Form 500 Schedule 1.

Were you a full year Georgia resident and indicated that you were in the Georgia state program?

Are you age 62 or older in 2021?

Note - Only the taxable portion of the SS benefits are excluded and only the taxable portion of any retirement income is excluded if you are eligible.

Up to $35,000 of retirement income is excluded if you are age 62 thru age 64

Up to $65,000 of retirement income is excluded if you are age 65 or older

Thanks.  After comparing with 2020 paperwork, I see where they got the number for retirement income.  The problem seems to be on the 2021 form the taxable portion of my social security benefits is 0 on the Georgia form.  The number from the federal seems not to have been transferred.  I really appreciate your reply.  It made me dig further and look closer at social security.  Now I don't know how to get the Georgia form to pick up the taxable social security amount.  I don't see where there is a place to enter it.

The taxable amount of the SS benefits reported on the federal Form 1040 Line 6b should have transferred to the Georgia return when you started the state return.

If you are using the TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions you can click on Forms.  When in Forms mode you can access the Georgia Schedule 1 and enter the taxable SS benefits on Line 8 of Schedule 1.

If you are using the TurboTax online editions your only option is to delete the state return and then start the state return again.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for deleting a state tax return using the online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/how-do-i-delete-my-state-return-in-turbotax-online/00/25895
