Federal estimated Tax payment on prior year not entered on that year's return

I received a 1099INT from IRS in 2022. Went back on 2021 records and found did not enter on the 2021 return this mid year payment for estimated taxes due. Can I use that prior payment in 2021 for this years (2022) filing? Or do I have to file an amended return for 2021?

If you forgot to enter the estimated payments you made in 2021 on your 2021 tax return then you will have to amend your 2021 tax return. You cannot enter payments made in 2021 on your 2022 tax return. Please see How do I amend my federal tax return for a prior year?

To enter the Form 1099-INT received from the IRS:

  1. Click "Wages & Income" (under Federal) on the left
  2. Scroll down and click "Show more" next to "Investments and Savings"
  3. Scroll down and click "Start" next to "Interest on 1099-INT
