Federal Standard Deduction but NY State defaulted to Itemized

My federal filing calculated that the Standard Deduction was best for me, but when I look at my NY State return it is showing Itemized and the $$ is much higher than I would have expected ($28K vs the $19K I itemized on Federal).  I would have thought NY State return would have been Standard deduction as well, pulled over from the Federal.  No option to change it.  Again, itemized # seems high to me on State.

Any thoughts why this would be?   Thanks!

In NYS, you may itemize on your state tax return, even if you use the standard deduction on your federal tax return.

Turbo Tax will determine, based on your entries which is the best way for you to file.  Since your itemized deductions are lower than the federal standard deduction, it suggested that you take the standard on your federal tax return.  Because NYS allows you to itemize on the state, regardless of what you used on the federal tax return, it used the itemized to give you the best tax benefit.
