Question

filing MFJ federal, filing MFJ Penna, but need to file single state of New Jersey

Husband passed away 1-3-2023. I can file MFJ on Federal Taxes.  I was a resident of Penna until APril 2023 and PA  law allows MFJ also for 2023 tax year. But I am now a NJ resident and must file as single in this state for 2023.

My problem is Turbo tax automatically transferred all my info (Both our names, filing status,  etc.) and I can't find a way to change the New Jersey forms to just my name and single.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you.

NJ wants you to file as Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) as well for 2023.  Below is an extract from page 2 of  NJ GIT4.  So you are correct, TurboTax will not allow you to file a joint federal return that transfers to a single NJ return.

You will file part-year returns for PA and NJ as MFJ.   In the "My Info" section edit your information and your spouse's information to indicate you both lived in NJ on 31 Dec.  Also show you both lived in another state and select PA with the date you moved to NJ.

"If your spouse/CU partner passes away You generally are considered married for the tax year that your spouse/civil union partner passes away. Married couples must use the same filing status that you listed on your federal return. "
