Hi all,

Thank you in advance for your help. We recently findout that while TurboTax filed our taxes, IRS is requesting for a $600.00 payment since I worked in NY City for 3 months time period and the filing of my taxes was mostly based on Maryland since that is my home account.

So in a nutshell, IRS is asking for me to file for taxes to New York State.

Thanks for your help.

Depending upon whether or not you lived in New York City while you worked there, you will either need to file a nonresident New York return or a part-year resident return.  Please see the following link to determine which residency status you would file under for New York.

    New York residency details

Since you did earn income from sources within New York City, you will be required to file a return there if you meet the filing requirements as shown in the following link.

New York filing requirements for nonresidents or part-year residents

If your New York income exceeds the standard deduction based upon your filing status, you would need to file within New York.  The other time you may want to file is if you are entitled to a refund for your New York City taxes that were withheld from your pay.

If you determine you do need to file a state tax return, when working within TurboTax, be sure to start with the New York return first to ensure you receive credits for any taxes paid in New York on your resident Maryland tax return.  This will ensure you do not pay taxes on the same income in two different states.
