Filing RI and MA State Tax

I am attempting to file state income tax for both Rhode Island and Massachusetts and am having difficulty providing accurate information on the TurboTax platform.

I resided in MA from January 1 - May 31, 2021 and resided in RI from June 1- December 31, 2021. For the entire year of 2021, my entire income was MA sourced. From my understanding (and from the platform's recommendations), I need to file state taxes for both states. For MA, I need to file as both a part-year resident (because of my move) and non-resident (because I continued to earn MA-sourced income after moving to RI). For RI, I need to file as a part-year resident (because of my move). It is unclear to me whether taxes were withheld for MA and RI during the time that I lived in RI and worked in MA, and do not know how to find this out based on my tax documents.

An additional dilemma is that when attempting to complete my MA state return, it asks for information about my completed RI state return, and vice versa. Therefore, I cannot complete either return without having the finalized information for one of them. I attempted to complete MA first, then RI. These are the specific questions that I am unable to answer for each:

MA

  • For the question "Pay Tax to Another State", I received a message that says "You may not know the amount of tax you'll pay to another state if you haven't yet completed the other state's return. Once you've done so, return here and complete this section of the review." Subsequent questions ask about finalized numbers of taxes paid to other states.

RI

  • When completing the Other State Tax Credit Summary for MA, it asks for the income that was taxed by MA and RI. I'm not sure how to find this information out?
  • It also asks for my adjusted gross income from my MA return which I do not have because I haven't completed it yet.

I apologize if my question doesn't make sense. I am at a loss and would appreciate any advice on how to proceed. Thank you

Since your income was entirely MA-sourced all year, it is all taxable by MA.  As a part-year resident, you will file MA Form 1-NR/PY to account for all that income.  Your return will include Schedule R/NR to break down when the income was received.

Your RI income is all the income you received after becoming an RI resident.  Since that income is also taxed by MA, it is all double-taxed income.

You'll be able to claim an "other state credit" on your RI return for the taxes paid to MA on the double-taxed portion of your income.  (You do not claim an other state credit on the MA return.)

In TurboTax, complete the MA tax return before you do the RI tax return, so that the program can calculate and apply the credit correctly.

Hope this helps.
