Filing Separately in one state after Filling Jointly on Federal

My fiance lived in Virginia. I lived in Maryland. We got married and moved to California. We filed our federal taxes jointly. Maryland and California allowed us to file jointly. Virginia is saying we have to file separately.

Is there a way to keep our Federal, Maryland, and California taxes MFJ and only do his Virginia state taxes MFS?

Appreciate any guidance!

Yes, you will need to create a mock return to file your VA state return separately when you file your federal jointly.

How do I prepare a joint federal return and separate state returns?
