Florida Resident Working Remotely / W2s and 1099-NEC

Hello,

I am a full-time Florida resident for 2020 and I work remotely (in Florida) as a W2 employee for a company based in South Carolina.  There were no state or local taxes reported in boxes 15-20 (all blank)

Additionally, I have 1099-NEC income for some independent contracting work for an Alabama-based company and a Tennessee-based company - again, completely remotely from my home state of Florida.

Do I need to file state taxes in SC or AL and TN for the respective W2 and 1099-NEC income, though all were earned completely remotely from my home in FL?  Thanks in advance!

No, you do not need to file SC, TN, or AL if all of the income was earned while you were physically located in FL.    What matters is where you earned the income—not where your employer or client is located.

    • Six states—Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Nebraska, New York, and Pennsylvania—had implemented so-called convenience rules prior to the pandemic, while Massachusetts adopted a temporary income sourcing rule with the same effect in response to pandemic-era telework.
