Did you file a non-resident return for the other state?  how much tax was on the return (prior to any taxes withheld)?

Yes, I filed for the other state...my wages in the other state prior to taxes withheld?

This may sound stupid...but when you say enter the tax, what amount are you referring to? I realize this comes from my other state return, but don't know what it refers to

When you prepare the non-resident return, it will say the total tax on it.  That is the amount entered, which is before any tax withholding would be applied.  So for example, if I filed a non-resident return for Iowa and the tax was $800, and my Iowa withholding was $850 (I get a $50 refund) I will enter $800  for my out of state tax credit.

Ok, then you will enter the tax on the return for the 2nd state in the credit for taxes paid on the resident return.

TurboTax does this computation when the non-resident return is completed by to the resident return.

Do it in that order and you should have no issues.
