I'm so annoyed that just changing the WTH to lowercase worked. TurboTax needs to really fix this bug. Its completely unacceptable that they dont have some sort of front end validation or backend conversion of these values to be able to convert to the right format. Get it together TurboTax.

Yeah I just spent a couple of hours trying to fix this bug and one other bug from a Robinhood import before I found the lowercase WTH fix. 😠

I just finished helping a TurboTax customer with this issue. The customer had called in previously, and had been told to try entering "wth" (exclude the quotes) at the end of the Payer ID, adding zeros, as well as calling their employer to confirm that the Payer ID matched with the Employer's information.

None of these solutions resulted in fixing the problem. I asked the customer if he had imported his W2s and he acknowledged that he had. I then took the customer through deleting his W2s and opting to re-enter each one manually by typing in the information. The customer did have to import the info on the first screen, but I made sure the customer also checked that imported info for any discrepancies, and there were a few incorrect lines. After correcting those, I had the customer input all the form lines himself.

When he was finished, we had him review again, and voila, there were no errors, and he was able to successfully efile.

SOLUTION: change WTH to lowercase wth on your W2 forms. and voila!!

I am having the same error.  It is due to a glitch in the program.  If you have more than one job that withheld state income tax the second job listed is not in the correct fields cause the program to detect an error that is impossible for the user to fix.

Nothing works for me on the UT TC-40w. I have tried the lowercase twh. I've tried reentering all my W-2's. Federal review is perfect. State comes up saying the numbers are missing. But I cannot click on the field on the TC-40w to fix it. How do I get passed this Turbo Tax error?

It is not "twh". The first eleven characters are numeric and the last three are “wth.” Please do not include hyphens.

    Example: 12345678901wth.

    Hey all,

So this was already said but I figured that more people confirming it would be helpful.  Delete your state return and go back to the federal wages.  Edit each W-2 and make the WTH at the end of the state ID lowercase.  Once you've saved the lowercase for each W-2 skip to the federal review and then redo the state taxes.  I thought this fix was stupid, but it worked so I will advocate for it 🙂

    Good luck!

This didn't work for me. I've changed everything a dozen times but the error still comes back

Another possibility since we don't know what all you've tried.  If the employer included the letters "UT" along with the employer ID number, do not include the UT in the same number field.   The UT goes in a separate little sub-box.  Box 15 has 2 entries; the UT goes only in the first sub-box.   Some people have tried to include the UT in the same sub-box as the number.   And you've likely tried using lower case "wth" at the end of the number, but be sure you have done so on all W-2's and 1099's that have a state employer withholding tax number.

Having the SAME issue. I have removed the W-2 that is having the problem and re-entered it in. Deleted the State form and re-did that with the "wth" as lowercase. I still get the SAME error. I'm about to dump TurboTax and switch to H&R block. THEY need to fix this issue as they have already been paid by me to file my taxes.

Did you ever get this figured out? I am having the same issue

The Utah TC W40(1) payer ID must be a 14 character number. The first eleven characters are numeric and the last three are “wth.” Please do not include hyphens.

    Example: 12345678901wth.

Utah will NOT accept any other version for the Payer ID.

For additional information, please see TC-40W, Part 1.

@LenaH  Didn't work. I had already tried entering the data in with "wth" in lowercase, which SHOULDN'T cause an issue in the first place if the software is written correctly.  I then deleted the W-2 in question and re-entered it and still the same error. Lastly I re-did my taxes from the start and ended up getting the SAME message again. The State Payer ID is from a huge hospital and was validated by them as being correct.

This is NOT a user error if the person needs to know before hand that they should enter in the "wth" in lowercase, which in SOME cases corrects the issue. Others in this same thread have had to re build their W2 or their taxes entirely in order to resolve the issue.

Intuit needs to acknowledge that there is a bug and they need to fix it. Others have reached out to Intuit support and got the run around. Your "EXPERT" response gave us ZERO insight on how to resolve this issue except to reiterate the SAME INFORMATION that the software already has told us, which should work IF the software was written correctly, but there is a glitch or bug in the code that needs resolved if people are having this issue.

@Trevor8 - No. Intuit support just told me the same thing that I am entering it in wrong even though I have complete redone my federal and state taxes with fresh W2s. I ended up printing out my forms and mailed them in. I paid through e-check on the state's website.

I will be using a different tax program next year because Intuit could care less and they just tell me that I am using the wrong number, which is 100% incorrect.

In case anyones like me and procrastinated til april to fill alllll of this out, I also had this problem. It seems editing the WTH to all lowercase on every form I had was the answer!

I hope anyone else struggling finds this and that you're able to fix it simple!! Good luck!!

Everyone still trying this: edit the Employer's ID in the federal income page so the WTH are lowercase

    May 12, 2021

MAKE SURE TO CHECK ALL THE W2's LISTED.  My TurboTax kept saying that MY W2 was the one having the issue with the payer ID, and we tried everything everyone suggested and it still showed the error. After an hour of dealing with this, my husband thought to check his W2 and lo and behold, his W2 had a hyphen in it. We fixed his W2 and this resolved the issue, even though turbotax said very clearly that it was MY W2 that was the issue.
