Full-time residency in MD for me, but part-time residency for spouse

I got married last year (2021) and my spouse moved to MD from VA in the middle of the year. I was a full-time resident of MD but my wife was part-time. We are filing as Married-joint and I completed the Federal return. However, now that I am at the state, TurboTax says we should complete as part-time in MD. It is asking me to verify the dates of residency in MD while filing in my wife's dates of living in MD (and indicating a move from VA). But I was a full-time resident for the entire year so I don't understand this. Please advise....thanks!

The Maryland form does not include lines for split residencies, but a couple can file together if one spouse was a full-year MD resident, and the other was part-year.

Verify your wife’s dates of residency so MD knows one of you was a part-year resident.

You will be able to subtract your wife’s Non-Maryland Income and Non-Maryland Losses and Adjustments.

Many thanks ErnieS0! I finished going through the MD state taxes (including subtracting out my wife's non-Maryland income) and I think it worked fine. Then I downloaded Virginia, but when I went to start that, TurboTax told me I'll need to use "Married filing separate" as my filing status. It says to follow a link for step-by-step instructions on how to do this, but when I click on this it just takes me to the TurboTax Community home page. Did I just waste $45+ on buying VA through TurboTax???

No. A part-year Virginia resident will have to file separately, so you will have to create a separate “mock” return for your wife.

TurboTax state will not work without federal so you will have to create a “mock” federal and state return.

If you are listed first on the tax return, it’s sometimes easier to create this mock return from scratch. Select File > New Tax Return in the top left to create a new return. Enter only your wife’s info.

Or you can select File > Save As to duplicate your existing return. Give it a new name and use that to create your mock return. Delete all your info. If you are listed first, you will have to switch the names to put your wife first. Then change your filing status to married filing separate.

Either way you will have to mail your state return. Use certified mail with proof of delivery so you’ll have a record that VA received your return.
