Hi.

I filed a TurboTax generated Georgia state tax return that showed a negative Georgia net income and $0 tax liability but received a letter from the state of GA saying they show a $2,187 tax liability. How do I correct this?

If you purchased Audit Defense for your  tax return, call TaxResources, Inc. at 877-829-9695, or report your IRS letter on their web site. http://intuit.taxaudit.com/ Do not contact the IRS until you have spoken to TaxResources. They may contact the IRS on your behalf.

If you did not purchase Audit Defense, you can get help with your IRS letter from TurboTax at the following link.

Just a guess as to what went wrong:

Do you live in another state with an income tax, and work in Georgia?

If so, when you prepared your state tax returns, did you complete your non-resident GA return first, before you did your home state return?

In TurboTax, the sequence in which you do your state returns is critical in order for the program to correctly apply any "other state credit" that is due.

The general rule is: your report all your income on your home state return, even the income earned out of state. You file a non-resident state return for the state you worked in and pay tax to that state. Your home state will give you a credit, or partial credit, for what you paid the non-resident state.
