Question

Go to school in one state live in another

I currently rent an apartment in another state because I go to Graduate school there. But I haven’t  lived in my home state since July 2019. Before I said I was a part year resident, I owed taxes in my home state. Was I supposed to say that I was a part year resident?

If you moved into your home state in July 2019, you are a part-year resident of that state and a part-year resident of the state you moved from.  If you had income in the state you moved from in 2019, you may need to file a state tax return there.

If you earned income in the state where you went to school, you may have a state tax return filing requirement in that state as well.

The specific filing rules vary by state.

Thanks David! I think I said this wrong. The last time I lived and worked in my home state was July 2019. I’ve lived and worked in the other state for school since then. I filed both returns, but I had to file as a part year resident to not owe taxes in my home state. Was that the right thing to do?

Simple answer: yes, you should have filed as a part year resident of your home state.

It's not clear how you managed to change home states while residing in a school state.  i assume it's  because you parents moved.  If you are their dependent, their home is your home.

Thanks Hal_Al! I didn’t change home states, but I spent majority of 2019 in the state where I go to school. I’m in graduate school and an independent student, so I actually have to rent an apartment and live here. I also make income here.
