Federal and state refunds are not coordinated. The IRS sends out federal refunds and the Arizona Department of Revenue handles state refunds.

Generally, federal comes before state. Not always. One possible reason is an incorrect stimulus amount. The IRS said it will correct tax returns if the stimulus is wrong. That will delay your refund.

Your return may also be delayed if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC).

Overall, the IRS anticipates nine out of 10 taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days of when they file electronically with direct deposit if there are no issues with their tax return.
