Question

Hello. I filed my 2022 tax returns. I received a refund from my State returns but had to pay on my Federal. But Turbotax did not apply the State to the Federal. Why not?

I selected the option to apply my State tax refund to what I owed on my Federal. But Turbotax did not apply and my credit card was billed for the total amount. Why?

Sorry you misunderstood. You can never have a tax due deducted from a refund. You will still get the full refund and have to pay the full tax due yourself. Turbo Tax just showed you a screen at the end combining federal and state . But that was only for your own info.

You can only have the Turbo Tax fees deducted from your refund (and only from a federal refund).

That's not what it said as an option. The last screen did not combine State and Federal. Both were separate. In fact, State was $0. It didn't show even a refund. Plus, Turbotax billed me for all fees to them. It showed up on my credit card statement. Nothing was taken out of my State to apply toward their fees.

@music4ibc You misunderstood a summary that netted the difference between a tax due and a refund you were getting.  It is NEVER possible to pay a federal tax due from a state refund, or to pay a state tax due from a federal refund.  Never.   The only thing that can be paid from a federal refund is your TurboTax fees, when you choose "refund processing" and allow a third party bank to receive your federal refund, remove your TT fees and send you the rest of the federal refund.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.
