Hi, could you please help here. I am an independent contractor living in another state but the company that hired me is based in ny. I was living in fl when i was hired as an independent contractor. The company that hired me has no place to work out of. All the work is done remotely, via video chat. Do i have to pay ny tax as an independent contractor?

Q:  Do i have to pay ny tax as an independent contractor?

A: Not unless you actually (physically) perform any work within New York State.  If you as a non-resident of New York never physically perform any work within the State of New York, then you will have no income tax obligation to New York State.

The determining factor is the location where you physically perform your work.  The location of your virtual clients is irrelevant.
