If you are a South Carolina resident, you are taxed on all income, regardless of where it was earned.

South Carolina does give you a credit for taxes paid to another state which would be reported on Form SC1040TC.

You can complete your South Carolina return in the state section of TurboTax if you have not filed your return yet.

While answering the questions in the South Carolina state return, you will see a screen for Credits and Taxes.  When you reach this screen, locate the section titled  "Credit for Taxes Paid"

  1. Select "Taxes Paid to Another State"
  2. Answer the questions until you reach "Other State"
  3. Here you will select the nonresident state where you paid taxes under "Other State"
  4. Select Continue after entering the state name.
  5. You will then be prompted to enter the portion of income taxed by the other state
  6. On the next screen, enter the amount of tax from the Other State

If you have already filed your South Carolina return, you will need to amend your South Carolina return to claim the credit for taxes paid to Virginia.

Please note the release date for the amended return in South Carolina is not scheduled to be released until February 20, 2020.

Attached are instructions on how to prepare an amended return.

Do I need to amend?

How to amend my return?
