Question

How do I calculate the credit for tax paid to another state? I moved from WI to IN during the year. I held the same job all year. WI withheld tax on all wages.

I moved from Wisconsin to Indiana during the year. I held the same job all year. My employer did not update my address, so Wisconsin withheld tax on all wages. I also had income from interest earned, dividends, and capital gains on stock sales. I am trying to determine the Indiana credit for tax paid to Wisconsin. One of the Turbotax inputs for this calculation is "Other State Income Taxed by Indiana". How do I calculate this? Is it the same as my Indiana AGI?

Because you moved from Wisconsin to Indiana, you will file a Part-Year Resident return for each state.  You will report the income your earned while you were in each state to that state only, so there will not be a credit for taxes paid to another state.  Because your employer did not change the withholding, you should receive a Wisconsin refund if you allocate the Wisconsin wages to the amount you actually earned in Wisconsin.
