Question

How do I change Line 9a from 1 to 0 on the 2019 Michigan Individual income tax return Form MI-1040?

I claimed single in the federal section and claim 0 on my pay stubs.  When the form is populated to file ,a 1 is on line 9a.  I need to change it to 0 and can't figure out how to.

No, this entry does not correspond to the -0- claimed for your paystubs. The -0- will result in the maximum withholding for your earnings. You are still allowed to take the $4,400 as a personal exemption.

See the 2019 MI-1040 Tax Book, page 3 regarding exemption allowances.

The only time this should not be used would be if you were claimed as a dependent on someone else's return. Then, you would need to enter a check in box 9e. This would be done by adjusting your My Info section to report that you could be claimed as a dependent and someone did claim you as a dependent. TurboTax would then automatically populate the Michigan return.
