I need to delete California Income Tax form 3554 "New Employment Credit" form.  It won't allow me to just delete it.  The form doesn't apply to me.  How did it get there.  Did I answer previous question wrong?

How Form 3554 was populated and how to remove:

Most likely what happened is when you got the portion of your CA state return that says " Credit and Taxes" if you scroll down the page there is a section called "Credit Recapture" and right underneath it says, “New Employment Credit Recapture. Learn More". Clicking start on this portion brings you to a screen that says, “New Employment Credit Recapture". Here you will see "where it says "New Employment Credit Recapture" and there is a box where there must have been a figure inserted, most likely "0" if you did not need this credit. Putting a figure in that box automatically populated that form causing it to now give you errors on the State Return review asking numerous questions about form 3554. Unfortunately, at this point you cannot go to delete a form or even go back to that box and remove the "0" as the only thing that will work is deleting your CA State return and starting over this time making sure that you do not go into the "New Employment Credit Recapture" by selecting start next to it if you do not need to fill out form 3554.

For instructions on how to delete your state return in TurboTax Online please see the TurboTax FAQ below:

HOW CAN I ELIMINATE THE FORM FTB3354 FROM MY TURBO TAX RETURN

July 26, 2019

It was hard but I figured out how to delete. I'm on Deluxe Desktop, downloaded from online. I'm on a Mac.

Get into the view with the list of forms on the side of the screen. (Not in Easy Step mode).

The form I cared about didn't show up in the lefthand list. So I clicked "Open Form," and a search box appeared. Select "California" from the dropdown, otherwise it won't appear. Search for the form number. (Again, won't appear if I didn't select "California" first, which is terrible.)

The form will open.

Then, go to the menu bar at the top of my Mac (not within Turbotax). Click "Forms." Click "Remove Form."

On the 3554 question I put in a 0, instead of leaving it blank. This does not apply to me, I went back in and removed the 0 but it still shows up asking for more information. How do I clear this entry?

@nancylhenry1

You are posting in an old cluttered thread from last year.  While someone "might" see it here and respond here in this old thread, you'll have greater visibility if you start your own new thread and explain your details there.   If you do, then continue to watch both threads.

If you want to start a thread, click the blue "Ask a Question" button at this page:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/02/202

The question title line has limited space, but there is a box underneath it where you can explain your situation in more detail.  In the title line mention Calif. Form 3554 and your issue to attract someone who may be familiar with it.

It's OK to delete forms that you know don't apply to your return, or are duplicated or blank.  Here's the general procedure for deleting unwanted forms, schedules, and worksheets in TurboTax Online:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax. (To do this, sign in to TurboTax, and select the Take me to my return button.)
  2. In the left sidebar, select Tax ToolsTools.
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  4. Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet and follow the onscreen instructions.

Windows Instructions

  1. Switch to Forms mode.
  2. In the left pane, select the form you want to remove. (if you don't see it, click Open Form at the top).
  3. After the form is generated in the right pane, click the Delete Form button at the bottom of the window.
  4. Follow any on-screen instructions to remove the form or forms.

Mac Instructions

  1. Switch to Forms mode.
  2. In the left pane, select the form you want to remove (if you don't see it, click Open Form at the top).
  3. From the Forms menu, select Remove [form name].
  4. Follow any on-screen instructions to remove the form or forms.

Solution doesn't work. You can't delete form 3554 nor re-start over your CA tax return when you are already at e-file stage...  and the errors will keep you from e-file. Only way to get around this error is to enter XXX or 0 to get out of the mess.... Please fix this bug in the software and allow users to decline this section.

If the CA Form 3554 does not apply to you, take a look at the following TurboTax help articles to see the step-by-step instructions for deleting a form:

No left menu?

April 16, 2023

If you are using TurboTax Desktop/Download, you won't see a left menu. Those directions apply to TurboTax Online.

As mentioned in the previous response from AnnetteB6, see here for instructions to delete a form in the Desktop version.
