Question

How do I determine what the "Taxable State Refund" amount would be for my Husband? I'm on the State taxes section and the Allocate Federal Amounts page.

Filing in Maryland jointly with husband.

It would be one half of the taxable state refund listed on your federal tax return, assuming you filed a joint tax return. This would be a situation were you itemized your deductions in 2022 and deducted state income taxes. If there was a refund of some of those taxes, they may be taxable in 2023 since you deducted taxes, a portion of which was later refunded. It would appear on line 1 of your federal Schedule 1 Additional Income and Adjustments to Income.

To view your form 1040 and schedule 1 to 3:

  1. Choose Tax Tools from your left menu bar in TurboTax Online
  2. Choose Tools
  3. Choose View Tax Summary
  4. See the Preview my 1040 option in the left menu bar and click on it
  5. Choose the Back option in the left menu bar when you are done
