The way that you file a final tax return for your company depends on your business structure:
- if you have a corporation, you'll need to file a Form 1120 (or 1120S for an S corporation) and check the "final return" box. You'll also need to mark the K-1 from the S corporation final. This is also true for LLCs taxed as a corporation.
- if you have a partnership, you'll need to file Form 1065 and check the "final return". Make sure you also check the "final K-1" box for each partner. This is also true for LLCs taxed as a partnership.
- if you have a sole proprietorship, you'll file Schedule C with your personal return (Form 1040). Make sure the Schedule C is marked final with the words "FINAL RETURN" written across the top of the Schedule C.
For LLCs and corporations, don't forget to dissolve your business with your state.
