Question

How do I file new state return after amending federal return?

I noticed a mistake with my investment cost basis after I e-filed my federal return--I had NOT yet filed my state return and didn't think I should file it with known-bad information.

I immediately made the changes and filed an amended federal 1040-X.

Now TurboTax is insisting on creating a Illinois amended return that only refunds me the difference between what the original state return would have been and what the amended return would be worth.

How do I get Turbotax to create a brad new state return based on my amended federal results?

to do what you are suggesting:

First, delete the state tax return.

That doesn't work--it calculates a wrong number because it tries to create a new state tax return with an amendment that assumes I already filed the original state tax form.  The number it was producing made no sense.

I couldn't figure it out so I ended up just filling out the form by hand on my state's website using my new 1040.

@orh You had to cancel the amended return, there is an option for that on the left menu bar, and then make your changes, then file the state return.

Sorry you had to file the state return by hand!
