Purchased Turbotax deluxe. How many free e-files do you get for both Federal filing AND state filing? If one each, do you just purchase additional e-files?

With the CD/download software---desktop software----you get up to five federal e-files and e-files of the states attached to them.    The five federal e-file limit is an IRS limit---not a TurboTax limit.  If you have more than five federal returns to file, you have to file the additional ones by mail.

Please note--when you use the CD/download you get the free federal e-files and the state program to prepare state returns.  There is an extra state e-file fee for each state return that you e-file.   That fee is $20 and increases to $25 on March 1.   You can avoid the state e-file fee if you file the state by mail.

If you purchased the TurboTax Deluxe desktop CD/Download edition, the software provides 5 free federal e-files (number set by the IRS).  After the 5 e-files have been used all other tax returns have to be printed and mailed.  You cannot purchase any further e-files.

If you purchased the software from TurboTax or a retailer who had the Deluxe edition for Federal + State, you will received one Free state software download.

There is a state e-file charge that is currently $20 (increase to $25 on 03/01).  This charge can be avoided by printing and mailing the state tax return.
