Question

How should I treat income shown on a W-2 for money earned in Georgia, if the state is shown as AL? I live in Alabama, worked in Georgia.

I assume you mean that the state tax on your W-2 was paid to Alabama.

If your employer withheld Alabama tax instead of Georgia state tax, you will need to file a nonresident Georgia return to report the wages you earned in Georgia.  If you had no Georgia tax withholding, you will owe Georgia taxes on this income when you file your Georgia state tax return.

Then when you prepare your Alabama resident return, TurboTax will calculate the credit due to you on your Alabama return for the taxes calculated on your Georgia return.  You should receive refund on your Alabama tax return due to the credit.

In TurboTax, you should prepare your nonresident return before preparing your Alabama return.

If you are still working in GA now, you may wish to have the Company withhold Georgia taxes instead of Alabama taxes for 2019.
