Question

How to File? I worked in NYS as a non resident and paid non resident tax in 2020. I did not work in NYS in 2021, but will work in NYS again in 2022 as a non resident.

How should I file NYS in 2021 if I had no income, but did in 2020 and will again in 2022.

No. If you have no income from New York sources, you do not have to file a NY return. Having a one-year break will not cause any issues because no employer is reporting New York income to the state.
